A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
