Defense Department Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Put Troops in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question included details about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Potential Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released later this week.
