PSG Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now won the prestigious trophy on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
